Deep Sjeng beta - Chess Tiger 15

Open Dutch CC 2002 Leiden NED (2), 19.10.2002
[Annotation by Jeroen Noomen and Gian-Carlo Pascutto]

1.d4 d5 2.c4 Nc6 JN: One of the variations I prepared for this tournament. This one was actually meant for Fritz, but since it was not participating I decided to use it right away. The Chigorin has become popular mostly due to Morozevich and is a hard opening to play against. 3.cxd5 Qxd5 4.e3 e5 5.Nc3 Bb4 6.Bd2 Bxc3 7.Bxc3 JN: Our 4th round opponent Warp played 7. bxc3 here. 7...exd4 8.Ne2 Nf6 9.Nxd4 0-0 JN: And Sjeng left preparations, which is quite fast for a variation this sharp. GCP: Not being a great expert in openings, I had neither time nor ability make extended openings preparations while the engine was still fully in development, and relied on the engines own play to make it through this minefield. 10.Nb5 Qg5 11.h4 Qh6 JN: An improvement by Morozevich, 11. .. Qg6 used to be the main variation. That one is good for white though, so the text move was discovered. 12.Nxc7?! [JN: Extremely sharp. Safer is 12.Be2 Rd8 13.Qc2 Nd5 14.Rd1 Be6 with a position that is about equal. GCP: Deep Sjeng tends to prefer sharp active positions rather than safer but duller lines, so this was no surprise.] 12...Bg4 13.Qb3 Rad8 JN: Another pawn sacrificed to keep the king in the center. Tiger is still playing from book here. 14.Qxb7 Ne4 15.Bb5 Bd7 16.Be2! [JN: Deep Sjeng finds the only move! Everything else is either bad or lost. 16.Nd5 Nd6 17.Qa6 Nb8 18.Nf6+ gxf6 19.Qxd6 Bxb5 20.Qxf6 Qxf6 21.Bxf6 Rd7 JN: with advantage for black, Marcelin-Conquest, Noyon 2001.] 16...Qg6 17.0-0 [JN: Perhaps better is 17.Bf3 Nc5 18.Qb5 Nb4! 19.Qc4 Nc2+ 20.Ke2 Nxa1 21.Rxa1÷] 17...Nxc3 18.bxc3 Nd4! JN: Thanks to the threat Bc6 black wins back material and is left with a slightly better position. 19.Bf3 Nxf3+ 20.Qxf3 Bc6 JN: Here Chess Tigers book ended! GCP: In the preceding moves Deep Sjeng found all the traps Jeroen laid, but also used a lot of time to figure out the correct defenses. The real fight started now with Deep Sjeng having more than half an hour time disadvantage, and a slightly worse position. It's good that Jeroen is on our side now! 21.e4 Bxe4 22.Qg3 Qc6 JN: Now white's knight on c7 is in trouble and to save it, white must sacrifice the pawn on g2. 23.Rad1 Bxg2 24.Rxd8 Rxd8 25.Re1 [25.Qxg2 Qxc7 26.Qg3 JN: also leads to a black advantage.] 25...Be4?! [JN: Throws away most of the advantage, better was 25...Bf3! GCP: I'm not so sure there was a significant advantage - Deep Sjeng thinks both moves only give black minor winning chances, and would play Be4 itself.] 26.Qe5 Qg6+ 27.Qg3 Bc6 [JN: Weakens the black pawnstructure, but the alternatives are no better and don't seem to lead to anything more than a draw either: 27...Qf5 28.Qg5 Qxg5+ 29.hxg5 Bc6 30.Na6; 27...Qxg3+ 28.fxg3 Bc6] 28.Qxg6 hxg6 29.Na6 f6 30.Re7 Rd1+ 31.Kh2 Rd2 32.Kg3 Rxa2 JN: Wins a pawn, but gives Sjeng the possibility to trade down to a dead drawn ending. There was nothing better left though. GCP: It was striking that Tiger evaluated this as a solid pawn advantage for black, whereas Sjeng understood that this is only a draw and had a much lower score. 33.Nb4 Ra3 34.Nxc6 Rxc3+ 35.f3 Rxc6 36.Rxa7 JN: I decided to play on a little, of course without success. 36...Rc8 37.Rb7 Kh7 38.Rd7 Kh6 39.f4 Rc3+ 40.Kg2 Rc4 41.Kf3 Rc2 42.Kg3 Rb2 43.Rc7 Rb3+ 44.Kg2 Ra3 45.Rd7 Rc3 46.Ra7 Re3 47.Rd7 Ra3 48.Rc7 Rb3 49.Ra7 Rd3 50.Rc7 f5 51.Re7 Rc3 52.Rd7 ½-½

Sjeng - Goliath [B22]
10. WCCC 2002 Maastricht (1), 06.07.2002

Goliath is a well known program that excels by a very high search speed - over 4 million moves per second in this game. The version which played in this game had additional pruning which allowed it to search over 20 moves deep during the game. Of course, all that power is of no use if the program does not understand positional play, as my opponent was to find out the hard way...

1.e4 c5 2.c3 Nf6 3.e5 Nd5 4.d4 cxd4 5.Nf3 Nc6 6.Bc4 Nb6 7.Bb3 d6 8.exd6 Qxd6 9.Na3 dxc3 10.Qxd6 exd6 11.Nb5 cxb2 We leave theory now. Black is a full two pawns up, but white has more active pieces. Together with black's weak d6 pawn, Sjeng considers this sufficient compensation. My opponent evaluated his position as winning - after all, he's 2 pawns up, isn't he? 12.Bxb2 Rb8 13.Ng5 Be6 14.Nc7+ Ke7 15.Ncxe6 fxe6 16.Nxe6 Well, maybe only 1 pawn. Notice how Sjeng trapped black's king in the center, has the bishop pair, on the ideal squares even and perfect lines for it's rooks. My opponent still thought he was winning. Sjeng understands that black can at best draw here.

Sjeng - Goliath after 16. Nex5

1r3b1r/pp2k1pp/1nnpN3/8/8/1B6/PB3PPP/R3K2R b KQ - 0 16

16...Ne5 17.0-0 Nec4 18.Bd4 Kxe6 19.Bxb6 Rc8 20.Bxa7 d5 21.Rae1+ Kd7 22.Bd4 Well, maybe black is no longer a pawn up, but now he has a passer. His king is horribly placed though, and he's still got two undeveloped pieces. Those pawns aren't looking too strong either. Deep Sjeng already thinks white has a pawn advantage here. 22...Rc6 23.Re2 Rh6 Panic - the opponent sees it's not so good after all. 24.Ba4+ Kc7 25.Rc1 The rest of the game is a slaughtering. 25...Rh4 26.Bxg7 Bxg7 27.Re7+ Kd6 28.Rxg7 Ne5 29.Bb5 b6 30.a4 Rd4 31.g3 Nc4 32.f4 Note how horrible black's piece coordination is. 32...h5 33.Rg6+ Kc7 34.f5 Rf8 35.Re1 Kd8 36.f6 Nd6 37.Re6 Nc4 38.Rg7 Rd2 39.Ra7 1-0
